What are the different types of abortion and abortion procedures?
There are two types of abortion: Chemical Abortion or Surgical Abortion.
A Chemical abortion (Medication abortion) is also known as an “at home abortion,” or the abortion pill protocol.
This protocol involves two medications, Mifepristone and Misoprostol, which are taken in separate intervals. These drugs are approved by the Food and Drug Administration up to 10 weeks from your last menstrual period. However, there are also risks and side effects associated with this method.
Side effects include but are not limited to:
- Severe cramping
- Bleeding
- Nausea
- Fever
- Diarrhea
- Weakness
- Fever/Chills
- Vomiting
- Dizziness
Risks include but are not limited to:
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Failed abortion
What should I consider before taking the abortion pill?
· Is the pregnancy in the uterus or ectopic
· How many weeks along is the pregnancy
· All available options and resources for before, during, and after pregnancy or abortion
· Your support group of friends, family, mentors, or others
What should I know about surgical abortion?
The primary types of surgical abortion are Suction Abortion and Dilation and Evacuation Abortion (D&E). How far along you are in your pregnancy will determine which surgical abortion you will receive. Suction abortion is approved for up to 14 weeks from your last menstrual period. A Dilation and Evacuation Abortion is used after 15 weeks of pregnancy.
As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and side effects.
Risks of a Surgical Abortion include but are not limited to:
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Incomplete Abortion
- Allergic reaction to medications
- Organ damage
- Complications and death increase with duration of pregnancy
How do I know I'm pregnant?
“Am I pregnant?”—this is a great question to ask yourself now. Making decisions regarding your health with the most accurate information is critical. You matter, your health matters, and you deserve the best care possible.
It is important to begin with a urine pregnancy test. A free, lab-quality pregnancy test is offered at our clinic by a medical professional. If you receive a positive test, a medical professional will evaluate you for a free sonogram. A sonogram is crucial in providing information and confirmation about your pregnancy. It answers three very important questions: Is the pregnancy in the uterus? Is the pregnancy viable (living)? How far along is the pregnancy?
A consultation with a medical professional in our clinic will allow you a safe place to consider your choices. Please schedule a free private appointment at our clinic today.
How many weeks pregnant am I?
The answer to this question will impact your options and decisions regarding your pregnancy.
The gestational age (how many weeks) of your pregnancy will determine what type of abortion you can consider. Find out how far along you are in your pregnancy by scheduling an appointment at our clinic.
Is the pregnancy viable?
Did you know that 1 in 5 pregnancies end in miscarriage? Most of these occur in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. An sonogram can help confirm the pregnancy’s viability if you have a positive pregnancy test.
Is the pregnancy in the uterus? Why could taking the abortion pill be a problem?
An ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy that happens outside of the uterus. This occurs when a fertilized egg implants in a structure that cannot support its growth. An ectopic pregnancy often occurs in the fallopian tube. The fallopian tubes connect the ovaries and uterus.
The abortion pill should not be used for an ectopic pregnancy because the abortion pill is only effective within the uterus. Since an ectopic pregnancy can be life-threatening, you should seek medical verification of the pregnancy, as soon as you suspect you may be pregnant or if you have ectopic pregnancy symptoms.
